Prototype : Electric Lexus RX

Toyota announced last month that it plans to build an electric vehicle with Tesla. Indeed Toyota is working on a new electric-vehicle prototype that will feature Tesla Motors technology, the first time we’ve heard anything on the two companies working together every since their new partnership was formed. Lexus RX 2010 (Toyota bought a $50 million stake in Tesla Motors this month)

Tesla said July 10 that it will deliver two prototypes vehicles to Toyota this month without identifying the models. Two days later, a Bloomberg report is naming names: the Lexus RX and the Toyota RAV4. Apparently, the two crossovers were chosen due to the fact that there are better suited to the weight of Tesla’s battery pack. Both prototypes will have a Tesla-style electric drive system, meaning thousands of small, laptop-size lithium-ion batteries as opposed to larger cells.

“We anticipate range and acceleration exceeding that of other announced electric vehicles of this class,” said Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla. He declined to talk about the project details.

The target for a model developed with Tesla would be for a car that costs about $40,000 with 40 kiilometers of driving range per charge.
